2011 BMX Outreach ProgrammeOnce again our school visits have gone down a treat. The main aim for our annual visits to schools and kindygartens is to promote bmx as a fun family sport. To foster good relationships within the educational sector helps to promote our club and also enables new membership which hopefully discovers the next generation of Champions!
Wednesday was a double dose with Cambridge Kindy having a morning and afternoon visits to cater their different ages. Tahi, the Sprocket Rocket mascot, was a hit with the little tackers. Kurt James did an outstanding job speaking about all things bmx. Jumping over the teachers and playing chase around their walk track kept both busy! In between these session a visit to Cambridge East Primary was squeezed in. Genelle Willers and Kurt James presented an awesome demonstration and once again had the kids wrapped with tricks and jumping teachers! Friday afternoon Hautapu school laid out the welcome mat. Our club riders Luca and Maddox Smythe helped Kurt put on a show. Thanks to Luca and Maddoxs' mum Rachel for helping to co-ordinate this visit. Home made jumps were set up with Luca showing his expertise! The biggest treat was, Yes! jumping of the teachers! |

CHULA VISTA SUPERCROSS
Marc Willers and the world’s top BMX riders will meet up in Chula Vista, California, at the weekend for the final round of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup. At stake are the overall Supercross titles as well as precious points for National Olympic qualification rankings.
2011 BMX World Champion Joris Daudet (FRA) is currently leading the World Cup series and will not back down an inch in his bid to add the Supercross title to his World and European titles. However, he is only a few points ahead of New Zealander Marc Willers, who won rounds two and three of the Supercross in Papendal (NED) and in London (GBR) on the 2012 Olympic track. In the women’s competition, the big favourite has to be Sarah Walker (NZL), who currently has a comfortable lead in the overall standings. Her main challengers will very likely come from the French team: look out for Manon Valentino, who won this year’s first Supercross stop in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Valentino’s teammate Magalie Pottier claimed the bronze medal at the UCI BMX World Championships in Copenhagen and is second behind Walker in the overall Supercross standings. Interview with Kurt James
A typical kiwi kid growing up on a farm close to Te Awamutu pulling donuts with four wheelers in the cow shed and causing havoc all over the farm. Find a hardcore dude obsessed with four wheelers and motocross from an early age and you will never guess that he also loves movies like Bridesmaids and The Hangover 2. He also listens to any music like Golden Oldies, and can not resist White Chocolate and Macadamia cookies.
"I am a strong believer in the phrase you can do whatever you set your mind too." Meet up and coming BMX super star, 19 year old Kurt Michael Kevin James from Cambridge, New Zealand. AKA Jimmy, Stu, fish. It soon became clear to me that this single minded ex pupil from St Peters School will achieve the one big goal set before him, to be an Olympic champion. Despite the fact that he is focused on achieving the dream there is no doubt that he is grounded in humility. Fully aware of the journey ahead he stated: "If you work hard towards the goal then you can get anywhere." Kurt made me understand that patience, hard work and taking every opportunity that arises will form part and parcel of a hard working career. It is clear that he knows that to become a world champion or gold medalist will take time but all the sacrifice that comes with the journey will be well worth it! Kurt knows this very well hence the quote on his website: "Live your dream, success is a journey, not a destination."
Currently in his second season racing in the Elite Men's category he is also working his way slowly towards a commercial pilots license. Despite many achievements and other goals it seems however that the love for BMX racing will be the main objective for the next few years. Last year, finally, after many years of racing at junior level, he raced his first Super Cross competition at Elite Men's level in South Africa and qualified for the quarter finals. "There is such a difference from junior categories where you might come up against 40-50 riders at the world championships, but at Elite Class a world cup event has anything from 140-240 elite men separated by seconds! Being at those races banging bars against guys you have idolised for all those years is the biggest learning point I have found. Importantly getting in the frame of mind where you have to beat these guys and believing you have the ability to do go as fast as them. You have to put it all together on race day overcoming the nerves, mistakes and excitement." According to High Performance BMX coach Ken Cools, Kurt is by far the most improved rider on the High Performance team. "It was just that," Kurt reflects with excitement. "It flicked a switch knowing that I can play with the big boys and being so young was awesome to know how far I had come in such a short period of time in my career." Positively he continued, "I have had a few big breakthroughs in my career so far but making the New Zealand High Performance team back in late 2008 was definitely a turning point reassuring me that I am good enough."
Turn the clock forward a few years and you will find Kurt training in Murrieta, California these days. He is sharing an apartment with Marc Willers. "I have the floor," he laughs. "But it is not as bad as it sounds. I have a mattress set up against the wall that gets put down at night. The apartment complex has a gym, pool and spa all inside a gated community next to a golf course. So, its really not to shabby." Other than training he was quick to point out that he is still 2-0 up over his room mate at indoor karts and 1-0 up at ten pin bowling. When it comes to pranks he most likely has the 1-0 lead over Marc as well. Recently Marc asked him to get some sausages. Kurt explained, "It was a quick decision to choose the ones on special, unfortunately I didn’t look that hard at the cover and they were Hebrew Kosher sausages, haha. It turns out he’s not so much of a fan."
Informal chat quickly turns back to why he is in California at the moment. A very focused young man explains, "A weekly layout for me would be in the gym Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings depending on the time of the year and training schedule. The BMX training range from general adaptation through to speed work closer to peak events. The afternoons on those days are spent either at the trails, or just a gentle ride. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are track and sprint days. Which also vary depending on time of the year and the race calendar." Like a card player with a Ace of Spades up his sleeve Kurt secretly adds, "There are also a few hours each week spent on training that I just can’t elaborate on unfortunately haha. As the Worlds are not too far away it is time to switch into the speed and skill phase."
Kurt is very appreciative towards Marc Willers and that Marc has a big impact on his life at this moment is evident. He often mentions Marc. "The impact of being able to train with him is huge! Having one of the fastest guys on the planet to try and catch everyday of the week has got to be good for training! And I can’t thank him enough for letting me stay for the summer. I believe he enjoys having me here as much as I like being here. It keeps him fresh on his toes and stops him from going insane." There is no doubt that Marc is someone who he respects.
Recently the duo raced in Amsterdam at the Papendal track near Arnhem. Kurt speaks about a track like nothing ever seen before. The jumps were bigger, the track was longer and to top it all the layout was also changed. What else could be different? Strong winds ensured that this world cup event will provide enough spectator excitement as well. Kurt talks about his experience at the competition. "Official practice was carnage, with 140 guys registered to race only 105 made the gate in qualifying. The rest were either carried off in a stretcher, or just pulled the pin knowing they were out of there depth. I found the track big and long! It was a good 80m longer than any other World Cup track. In conjunction with the wind and length made for a chronic leg burn that not many people were prepared for. The track is what I would call a practice track, it’s really good when riding by yourself. But when you get more riders next to you coming into the part where the track gets narrow and changes the direction, then it takes away the race factor and becomes more of follow the leader; more into survival mode." The experienced gained at this event was obvious. "It is not all about being the fastest guy. It is about who has the goods up top and is race prepared in all aspects. As the top 64 qualifiers are usually all within 1-2 seconds difference," Kurt says.
With the world championship in July, his objective in the short term is to get as fast as he possibly can. But to perform at the major events he needs to compete in other races. Young riders are under pressure to perform well as good results means increased funding. It seems like easy maths. Work hard. Improve your results. The outcome is more sponsorships and funding. More importantly a higher world ranking. The reality however is that nothing is easy and BMX riders learn this very quickly. For many the only way to get to other races is to fund the
costs themselves.Photo by Kurt - a day in Carlsbad, California. Between all the training he has to relax!
It is vital to have aspirations to compete in the World championship and the Olympics. But the journey is long and it is expensive. For Kurt it is about making the most of now and today. Recently he had the opportunity to visit YESS. YESS is a frame manufacturing company out of Canada. YESS is also his official sponsor and frame supplier since February 2011. He was introduced to the team and to learn the art on frame building. "I learned how hard it actually is to make a frame that can excel in all the areas key to BMX racing. Stiffness, looks, and to be as light as possible. But they have hit the nail on the head in all those areas. It really was a pleasure to be introduced to such a company." he explained. He is also involved in testing their frames.
There is no doubt that the future looks bright for young Kurt James. I think it is wise to comment at this stage that it will be worth your while to follow him as he climbs the ladder to success. The impression I have of him is that he will most likely not give up until he has achieved. He believes that all things are possible. That can only mean one thing to the BMX circle of professional riders. Watch out because someone is about to shake the ground you ride on! Grounded solidly to earth he has clear cut goals and objectives. Other goals are a career in aviation and to play an active part in BMX sport in the future someday. But for now, he is completely focused on BMX racing. Other forms of cycling takes no priority at the moment. He also wants to play an active role in raising the profile of the sport. He often reaches out to primary schools in the Cambridge area. He says, "I believe being out there for things like Christmas Parades and having a website for members of the public to view and follow do a lot for the image of not only myself, but the sport."
"I would like to give a shout out to YESS, YESS products, LEATT braces, BIKE NZ, SPARC, the ADASTRA foundation and my Mum and Dad for there continued support through trying to make it to the top. I invite you to visit my website www.KurtJamesOnline.com and to follow me on Twitter KurtJames167 and Facebook under Kurt James. If you have any questions on the sport or me, don’t hesitate to ask. Also a big thank you to Stephan and everybody at www.myfixie.co.nz for approaching me for the interview."

Cambridge rider Kurt James is currently based in the warmer climates of USA living and training with Marc Willers during the NZ winter. Whilst there, Kurt took the opportunity to travel to Canada and compete in a UCI round. Although a small race meet the quality of riders was world class. Top US rider Nic Long and David Herman had travelled to race, aswell as the top Canadian men. In Day 1 racing, Kurt made through to the final and finished a solid 4th, just missing out on a podium finish. Day 2 racing and Kurt was finding his form and qualified through to the final. This time Kurt finished 2nd and took a well earned podium position.
After racing Kurt took some time to look round the Yess factory and then travelled back to USA to continue his training in the sun.
